PD-1 is a 55 kDa glycoprotein member of the Ig superfamily and is expressed on activated T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells. PD-L1 (B7-H1) and PD-L2 (B7-DC) are ligands for CD279 and belong to the B7 gene family. PD-1 is an immune checkpoint and interaction with its ligands results in inhibition of T cell proliferation and cytokine secretion.
